Awards win for The Chough at the South West Bakery Championship - Oct 09.
Local newspaper quote:
Despite a record number of competitors, Padstow’s Chough Bakery had much to celebrate at the 2009 Western Bakery Championships with 16 prizes across 36 classes.
Its successes included first prize in the baguette and West Country cream tea scones classes and the family-owned company was highest-placed Cornish business in the Cornish pasty classes, with second and third positions.
Twenty-eight-year-old Danny O’Flynn caught the eye in the trainee classes with five seconds and a very highly commended.
Chough’s impressive performance at the prestigious championships, held at Cullompton, Devon, followed hard on the heels of September’s Taste of the West 2009 Product Awards, when the Padstow firm won gold, silver and bronze awards.
“It all adds up to a terrific show from a small Cornish family bakery competing head-to-head with the big boys!” declared senior partner Elaine Ead.
“The standard of competition was higher than ever this year, with entries from throughout the South West region – as far east as the Channel Islands and Dorset and up to Worcestershire in the north, and with 50 separate businesses entering.”
She added: “We were particularly pleased with our first prize in the West Country Cream Tea Scones category, as we sell thousands of scones every summer from our Padstow shop and now also send them as part of our cream teas throughout the UK by mail order.
“Danny’s performance in the trainee classes was a great achievement and shows just how important it is to invest in training. All told, the Chough bakery team have done themselves proud once again.”
At Cullompton, Chough’s results included second prize in the Undecorated Celebration Cake and Cornish Pasty (A shape) classes, and third prize in Tin Loaf 800g, Cornish Pasty (D shape) and Sausage Rolls.
It was very highly commended in Oven Bottom Coburg 800g, Jam Doughnuts and Farmhouse Bread.
In the Taste of the West awards, Chough won gold for Walnut Bread, silver for Farmhouse Loaf, Wholemeal Loaf, Multi Grain Loaf and Chiabatta, and bronze for Multi Grain Ring, Cheese and Tomato Quiche.
